The United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) examines government reports on violence against women in their respective countries. In 2014, his findings highlight several alarming points in India:

  • A sharp increase in violent crimes against women, particularly rape and kidnapping, indicating a 902.1% increase between 1971 and 2012, and continued impunity for such acts.
  • An escalation of caste-based violence, including rape, against women and girls.

According to the 2021 NCRB (National Criminal Records Office) annual report, “31,677 rape cases were registered across the country, an average of 86 cases per day, up from 28,046 in 2020 “.

Pengal Alayam “The Temple of Women” was created by Magali Provost, a therapist in alternative medicine, and Jean Emmanuel Briand, to take care of  them and help them to rebuild. She will visit India three to four times a year to ensure regular follow-up of women in charge. She’ll work with existing Indian associations, first in Kolkata and later in other Indian cities. She benefits from the four founding members and volunteers’s skills.
